AL has a versatile ability to create music in a variety of styles and genres, which is a challenge he has enjoyed. He also has experience and a great interest in video editing so understands how music works and tells a visual story. His work includes various corporate projects and some big name brands including Carphone Warehouse, Citroen and Armani.
The most significant project he worked on was the 2010 Papal visit to Britain of Pope Benedict XVI, where his music was heard in Hyde Park and leading parks in Birmingham and Glasgow by up to 80,000 people at each venue - and televised by the BBC and Sky. He also supervised the producing of the accompanying CD and DVD.
AL started as a studio keyboardist for Producers and DJ/Remixers and work includes tracks for All Saints, Jamelia and Beverly Knight. He has also had his own original jazz songs performed at Ronnie Scott’s and has worked on Smooth Jazz, Disco and Ambient projects, while continuing to compose music for multimedia from his South London home production studio.
Jazz/Vintage Style Songwriting
AL has written songs i.e. both music & lyrics, in various styles but a genre very close to his heart is the Jazz/Show style. He grew up listening to the record collection of his parents and grandparents, absorbing the sounds of Nat King Cole, Mel Torme, Frank Sinatra, Jack Jones, Tony Bennet, Bing Crosby, Matt Monro, Cleo Laine, Nancy Wilson to name a few! He was captivated by the works of the great American song-smiths like Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, George & Ira Gershwin, etc, not forgetting British songwriters like Vivien Ellis, Ivor Novello and Noel Coward.
AL was also enchanted by later great songwriter/composers like Henry Mancini, Michel Legrand, Bacharach and David, Marvin Hamlisch and Britain’s own Bricusse and Newley. AL soon realized the effect that melody and harmony had on him and has been inspired by the works of these legendry names.
AL’s authentic sounding songs have been championed by many top industry veterans: Laurie Holloway – Pianist and Arranger for Judy Garland, Liza Minelli, Sammy Davis Jr, Mel Torme: Leslie Bricusse – world renowned Lyricist, Musical and Songwriter: Peter King – world famous Jazz Saxophonist: Ted Scott – Sound Engineer extraordinaire to Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Julie Andrews, Gene Kelly.
AL has recently created and launched a website containing a catalogue of his vintage style songs aimed at TV/Film and Advertising
In a vastly changed world, AL feels it is still so important to keep alive this classic songwriting tradition.
